Mr Madila Animation By Rory WT & Beakus
The most incredible thing about Rory WT’s award-winning short Mr Madila is that it was his Royal College of Art Graduation Film in 2015! By rights this is the work of an experienced animator in his prime. Who knows what he will be capable of in later years!
I first saw this film about a year ago, but it has only just been made available online due to it’s tour of the festivals. Good job he did – just look at the amount of awards it has garnered. It’s been a winner at Fantoche, British Shorts Berlin, Anny Best of Fest, Flickerfest, Premier Plans Angers, Manchester Animation Festival – and at the RTS Student Awards! Plus the film was a semi-finalist in the Adobe Design Achievement Awards.
Mr Madila or The Colour of Nothing documents a series of conversations between the film-maker and a gifted spiritual healer, exploring the inner mind, the fabric of the universe, and the nature of reality itself, through the sacred art of animation and a good deal of piss taking. I really love the free styling of the animation and the mixing of live action in there as well – knowing when to use simple line drawing and when to make things more complex. I was so disappointed to find out that Mr Madila wasn’t real, but the fact that you thought he was at the beginning is so telling…
Can’t wait to see more from Rory WT and what he gets up to at Beakus
