ustwo – BAFTA Winning Monument Valley Game
If you like your mobile gaming with a big dose of MC Escher and a lot of charm then Monument Valley is for you!.
We featured the creative UI and gaming studio UsTwo before – now they have a real live Gaming BAFTA under their belt. they are an excellent example of a service company (they design and create UI for big companies like Sony) and they also create their own IP.
The game itself is a surreal exploration through fantastical architecture and impossible geometry. You get to guide the silent Princess Ida through mysterious monuments, uncovering hidden paths, taking advantage of optical illusions and outsmarting the enigmatic Crow People.
One of the inspiring things about it is that each level is a unique, hand-crafted combination of puzzle, graphic design and architecture. Like listening to an album or walking through a museum for the first time, Monument Valley is about discovery, perception and meaningful beauty.
As a player you get to interact directly with the architecture of the world – twisting and dragging to reshape the world to help Ida to explore. As you manipulate the environment the audio reacts to provide a atmospheric and beautiful soundscape. Although this was developed as an in-house project – you can see how so much of their learning could be applied in commercial projects.
Neil McFarland, director of games at ustwo games says, “We’ve focused our attention on the design of game alongside a lot of user testing, and we really hope Monument Valley is what people are looking for right now – a premium game of the highest artistic quality offering players a satisfying journey from start to end.”
Well I think this is really fling the flag not only for independent UK gaming but also for beautiful looking design in games – which is certainly not a given, despite the high budgets that some of the big games studios have. Download it and have a go and see if you agree…
