What is Sausage?  Well apart from being your favourite cylindrical savoury comestible it is the name of an animated short created by talented British animator Robert Grieves which made it on to the Oscar long list.  It is also a film that has done the rounds of the festival circuit garnering many awards and is now ready for internet release.

This release, of course, coincides with the much celebrated institution that is ‘British Sausage Week‘ (week commencing 3rd November, in case you didn’t know).  I spoke to Robert about his film and he told me:

“It’s been an exciting time for Sausage since wining ‘Best Short’ at PROMAX in 2013 and then winning 8 festivals awards.  I made this self funded solo project so I could showcase my love of storytelling and illustrative skills, as well as explore key issues about food ethics which I feel passionately about.  In brief, its about two artisan stallholders who’s idyllic world is invaded by a devious fast-food vendor. The ferocious turf war that follows brings these two kindred spirits together, providing the inspiration for a truly original idea.”

I think the retro feel is very charming – and the range of characterisations is very pleasing.  I realise that for the sake of story telling the plot has to move along quickly, but some of the simplification of food politics could be a bit misleading – what do you think?

sausage animation dotmogo Robert has regularly worked with the BBC, ITV, Disney Channel and the History Channel and is also a visiting lecturer at Camberwell College of Arts, and a contributor to the online animation magazine, Skwigly.  We’ll be looking forward to his next film…
