Put down the Karaoke mic and grab the MI Guitar
The guys at Magic Instruments based in San Francisco are all about making musical instruments more accessible and easier for people to learn. The Start-Up has therefore created the MI Guitar, a guitar that anyone can just pick up and play.
Similarly to its Keytar cousin the strings were replaced by buttons. However the twist is that the MI Guitar does not merge two instruments to create a new one. It takes its real inspiration from guitar hero, especially in the execution, in a way that it makes playing a note on the guitar easier and a lot less crafty.
The concept is that by taking away the technical difficulties which take time to learn, you can have a full day at work and still come home and play an instrument you’ve never played before without much effort. With the instrument comes an app that costs £5.99 a month, it has a database of songs with lyrics and chords, which match the labels on the buttons, for a quick go at a sing along.
Could people use this instrument and become professional musicians? Maybe not.
But maybe that was never the question. The aim seems to be clear; the brand reaches out to non-musicians focusing on easy fun rather than quality musicianship.
The instrument knows it’s limits. However Matthew Bellamy from Muse in a quote for their website brings up an interesting use for this instrument: ‘For singers and non-guitar playing musicians, it’s also a great tool for songwriting.’. The MI Guitar also has a built in speaker and can operate AC power or on batteries making it fully transportable.
We like this instrument at Make This Noise however we will not hang up our guitars just yet.
