Emanuele Kabu – Helio Sequence Music Video

Kaleidoscopic was the word that came to mind when Emanuele Kabu sent in his latest music video for The Helio Sequence’s new album out on Sub Pop Records. I was trying to think how I would describe it to a friend – geometric, relentless, cheeky and very colourful would be a start, but that wouldn’t give you a feel of a sort of animated Kandinsky meets Mondrian style of animation. In short, I love it!
I was curious about how he came up with concept, so I got to talking with him to get the scoop – he told me: “I had a lengthy discussion with the band about what sort of “mood” they envisioned for the video. I also read the lyrics and I asked them to tell me about the song (from words and sentences to abstract concepts) and why they wrote it. After this process we ended up with an idea about a colourful/bizarre video which constantly changes and never quite settles down into a fixed form.”
This concept of constant change informed the techniques that I ended up using. This chopping and changing was super interesting for me as it was the first time I ever did something like this.
The video is mostly hand drawn and then digitised (using a scanner) and edited. I used lot of different tools: markers, watercolours, ink, white out, acrylics and I did some completely digital animation too.

At this point I’d like to talk about another strange but wonderful video which Emanuele has on his site, the simple but direct – 31 Ways To Say Fuck Off. Apparently it started as a joke. The rules were simple – keep it simple (it must be able to made in to a GIF), it must loop, and must have a middle finger in every animation. Most of them are available separately as animated gifs here.
So there you go a short peak into the strange but beautiful mind of Emanuele Kabu – let us know what you think….
